Cholesterol and Lipid Profile Screening
Richland County Health Department offers lipid profile screenings in the office by appointment.

Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like substance found in the bloodstream and in all your body’s cells. Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs. When your body has too much cholesterol in your blood, it can build up in the walls of your arteries. The arteries can become clogged and narrow, and blood flow is reduced. If a blood clot forms and blocks the blood flow to your heart, it causes a heart attack. If a blood clot blocks an artery leading to or in the brain, a stroke results.

Total Cholesterol is the measure of the total amount of different types of cholesterol in the blood. A lipid profile is the breakdown of the different types of cholesterol in the blood, LDL, HDL, Triglycerides.

Richland County offers lipid profile screenings for a minimal cost.

CPR/AED
Richland County Health Department offers Cardiopulmonary Respiration (CPR) with Automated External Defibrillator (AED) classes upon request to groups.

Each year more than 950,000 adult Americans die from cardiovascular disease, making it the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. At least 250,000 Americans die of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) before they reach a hospital. SCA usually strikes without warning. Many of these lives can be saved quickly by phoning 911, initiating cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and providing defibrillation within minutes.

SCA is usually caused by an electrical malfunction that makes the heart quiver ineffectively. The treatment for this “quivering” is defibrillation. Defibrillation is the delivery of an electric shock that allows the heart to return to normal rhythm. Defibrillation is provided by an automated external defibrillation (AED). Survival rates have been shown to increase with early implementation of CPR and the use of an AED within the first 3-5 minutes.

Richland County Health Department offers CPR/AED training to groups as requested.
